A new surgery called sclerothalamotomy ab interno could be an effective treatment for open angle and juvenile glaucoma. The recently published results of a long term study concluded that this surgical non-invasive technique is safe and that it lowers IOP in patients with open angle and juvenile glaucoma.
This surgery resembles deep sclerectomy but it is done through the inside of the eye.
A probe is inserted through a corneal incision. Its heated tip passes through the trabeculum and the Schlemm canal and incises the sclera. About fout to six incisions remove several layers of sclera, leaving a fine layer of tissue that lets the aqueous humor percolate through it like a coffee filter. Minimal filtration blebs form on the surface of the eye (a little blister or bubble that slowly drains out excess aqueous humor).
The average age of the participants was 72.5 years for the 53 patients with open angle glaucoma and 9 years for the 5 patients with juvenile glaucoma. Complete success, defined as an IOP of 21 mm Hg was reached by 42 patients with open angle glaucoma and 4 patients with juvenile glaucoma.

|

On friday march the 12th world glaucoma day, the Quebec Glaucoma Foundation with the help of the CNIB organized a free glaucoma screening clinic at the Complexe Desjardins. The clinic was very busy and unfortunately at around 13:00 registrations had to be stopped as there was a four hour waiting time. Over one hundred people were screened. Dr. Gisèle Li a glaucoma specialist from Maisonneuve_Rosemont hospital was featured in interviews by Concordia University radio and Université du Québec à Montréal's television. Passers by could visit three information kiosks: the Quebec Glaucoma Foundation, the McGill glaucoma information center and CNIB. We would like to thank all our partners for helping to make this event possible: CNIB, the McGill glaucoma information center, the Jewish general Hospital, Zeiss Ophthalmics, the Bellevue Ophthalmology clinic, Daniel Papineau Opticien and Vision Experts. This initiative was made possible by the generous support of the Association des Médecins Ophtalmologistes du Québec and Pfizer.
